Keep Your Body Parts Out of My Space!

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

How oh how have I for my entire adult life missed out on this glorious experience called Jury Duty!? Well, I finally drew the short straw and yesterday was my day in the spotlight.?

If there’s anything worse then sitting in a room all day waiting for something to happen it’s sitting? in a room all day waiting for something to happen and the person next to you does not get the concept of personal space.?

Here we are 65 people stuffed in a room designed to hold 40 and I get to sit beside the? person who? sprawls out like an octopus with? various body parts? (i’m talking about her arms and legs — get your mind out of the gutter) invading my? comfort zone.

Now, I’m not talking about a heavy set person here.? I understand that sometimes? a body just? will not fit into limited space? and it is sometimes impossible to not invade someone else’s? space.? ? I’m talking about a person that has room in her own chair — she just wants more room.

You ever sit next to one of these people on an airplane?? Why don’t they get it?? Why can’t they understand that this is my space and that is your space.? I stay in my space and you stay in your space.? ? If you need anything from my space kindly ask and I’ll help you out.? And visy versy.? But please keep your body parts out of my space.?

Back to jury duty…? ? I got called up for one trial and had to go through the screening process.? I learned something? from that experience.? ? ? I had always thought that the whole jury process was centered around finding 12 unbiased people.? That’s wrong.? It’s all about? finding? 12 people who are extremely biased — biased toward either the plaintiff or the defendants side, depending on who’s questioning you.?

Anyway, Momma? (that’s the woman who watched over us while we waited to be called for a trial) played movies and served popcorn in the afternoon.? There was a rumor that we might be released early because the last trial was supposedly going to be settled out of court.? ? Momma? told us she would announce it over the intercom if we got to leave early.?

She came on the intercom and said, “I’ve got some great news…”

I started gathering up? my things so I could get out of there and salvage the rest of the afternoon as? Momma continued? over the intercom…

“I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance!”

Her death was swift and then we acquitted ourselves and went home.
